The Rhinelander High School volleyball team could not quite keep up with Antigo, falling in straight sets Tuesday night at Sheldon Fieldhouse.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-18, 25-14.

"We came out pretty good the first set and second set, played pretty tight up until about midway through the game and kind of ran into a few lulls on serve receive again," Hodag coach Dan Wolter said.

Despite the loss, which put Rhinelander to 4-21 overall and 0-8 in the Great Northern Conference, Wolter said there were plenty of signs of encouragement, especially out of his defense on Tuesday. As a team the Hodags recorded 39 digs and had 10 block kills.

"Our defense has stepped up big," Wolter said. "We had a lot of blocks tonight. We had a lot of touches off that block that turned into digs and (allowed us) to stay in points. Now we've just got to find a way to win those points.

"Our defense played, I thought, pretty good tonight. I think we had around 40 digs tonight, so we're staying in points and kind of just hanging in there, scrapping away, which is good to see as we come down the stretch here."

Rhinelander's middles came through with the best performances, statistically, for the Hodags. Freshman Kelsi Beran had four kills, two block solos and three block assists while senior Ariel Pauer had four kills, two block solos, two block assists and chipped in eight digs in the back row.

For the second straight match, Rhinelander finished with a positive attacking percentage at .047. The team had 14 kills and 11 errors in 64 total chances.

"We had a couple of big kills," Wolter noted. "Ariel Pauer and Kelsi Beran led the way on kills tonight. We're getting swings because we're keeping the ball alive. That's important. Now, we've just got to get our sets a little better on target and get on the net a little closer. We had a lot of attacks tonight that were off at the 10-foot line and it's tough to do damage back there."

Rivers Eagleson and Ava Lamers each chipped in three kills on the night for Rhinelander, while Allie Dornfeld had one block solo and four block assists. Addi DeMeyer had nine digs to lead the Hodags, while Carly Schmidt and Reagan Hartman had seven digs each. DeMeyer and Maddi Roeser combined for nine set assists while Lamers had the team's lone service ace.

Rhinelander travels to Mosinee on Saturday for the second GNC meet of the season. The Hodags will play Medford, Northland Pines and Mosinee in Saturday's three-round meet.
