Volleyball: Hodags push Tomahawk, fall in three sets on senior night
Meghan Scholz recorded 12 kills, including five in a row at one point, as Tomahawk pulled away to a 25-7, 25-21, 25-16 victory over the Hodags at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Rhinelander led 19-15 in the second half before Tomahawk rallied to finish the set on a 10-2 run. That included four consecutive kills by Scholz - the conference leader in the category - to close out the set.
"I think we did a pretty good job of kind of keeping them out of system a little bit and keeping the ball out of her range to swing that second set, which clearly helped us," Hodag coach Dan Wolter said. "She put away balls down at the end and we didn't have an answer for it. Everything was straight down and just to a spot where we weren't. That's what good players do."
Regardless, Wolter said he was pleased with how his team played, especially in the second and third sets, against a team that sits in second place in the GNC. Rhinelander was competitive in the third as well, down 18-15 before the Hatchets ended on a 7-1 run.
"The second and third sets were a lot of fun to play, kind of back and forth for the majority of both sets," Wolter said. "We pushed hard tonight. With it being senior night, I think that had added a little more energy level into the building and with the team trying to drive to get these seniors a home win for their last one."
For the first time in seven conference matches this year Rhinelander finished on the positive side in attacking percentage at .113 with 18 kills and 10 errors in 71 chances. Ava Lamers led the way with seven kills while Ariel Pauer and Allie Dornfeld had three kills each.
Maddi Roeser had seven assists for Rhinelander while Addi DeMeyer had six. The Hodags had 41 total digs in the match, led by Carly Schmidt with 11, Pauer with 10 and Lamers with nine.
"I think our dig defense, we did play pretty well," Wolter said. "Besides the four, five straight (Scholz) had to end that second set, we really kept the ball in play and got into good volleys with them. We had a handful of pretty big kills."
Rhinelander dropped to 4-20 overall and 0-7 in the Great Northern Conference with the loss and returns to action against Antigo this evening, whose lone GNC win so far came against the Hodags during the first GNC meet of the season last month.
With five GNC matches remaining, plus a non-conference invite at Wausau West, Wolter said he is hoping the team's play on Thursday will spark some late-season momentum.
"The competitiveness that we played with tonight was awesome to see," he said. "Hopefully we can keep that up. We've got five games left in conference. If we can continue building off of this and keep this kind of momentum and competitiveness going into next week, hopefully we can go down to Antigo, be competitive and pick up a game."
