Several local fire departments spent about four hours Wednesday evening, Nov. 17, at the scene of a structure file at Oak Leaf Auto Salvage in the Town of Pine Lake.

The blaze destroyed the building that housed the wood stoves that provided heat to the other buildings, the fire department reported.

Pine Lake Fire and Rescue, as well as the Pelican and Stella fire departments, were paged out at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a post on the Pine Lake Fire and Rescue Facebook page.

"Firefighters arrived on scene and upgraded the call by activating MABAS and requesting tankers only to the 2nd box for additional water," the post said. "This brought in tankers from Crescent, Newbold, Sugar Camp and Monico."

A Pine Lake Fire department spokesperson said as soon as units started arriving, they set up positions to protect the other buildings on the property that were near the fire.

"A large wood pile, two outdoor wood burners and some light equipment were stored in the building," the Facebook post said. "The wood burners served as boiler systems to heat the multiple buildings on site. The building consisted of a steel frame, wooden trusses and steel roofing. With the roof structure failing, firefighters operated defensively using several hand lines and a ground monitor."

The post said that firefighting efforts were made difficult at times due to the amount of firewood stacked around the building which made it hard to extinguish the flames.

"Firefighters were assisted in dismantling part of the pile by the business owner using a skid steer and loader to help break the pile apart."

Apparatus from Pine Lake used to fight the fire included Engine 2, Engine 1, Tanker 1, Tanker 2 and Rescue 7.

The spokesperson said the cause of the fire is still under investigation as this issue went to press, but did not appear suspicious.

The loss of the wood burners and other items stored in the garage will likely result in damages totaling between $70,000 and $100,000, according to the spokesperson.
