The Hodags did not hand out a most valuable player award. Instead, four objective awards, based on statistics, were presented to Ava Lamers, Addi DeMeyer, Reagan Hartman and Ariel Pauer. The four were the team's leaders this season in kills, assists, digs and blocks, respectively.
"We kept it pretty simple this year," coach Dan Wolter said during the banquet. "We're handing out certificates for out team leaders in statistical categories."
Lamers, a junior, led the team with 117 kills, more than double the second-best on the team (Kelsi Beran, 57). Lamers also had the best attacking percentage among those who had at least 50 attacks this season, at .116.
"She was a six-rotation player for us," Wolter said of Lamers. "Not only just the offensive side, leading the team, she led us in swings, hitting percentage and kills on the year. She was our go-to front row player when we needed a kill."
Pauer and Hartman were also Rhinelander's two lone All-Great Northern Conference selections this season. The seniors both received honorable mention.
Hartman, the team's libero, had 157 digs on the season and was also tops for the Hodags at the service line with a .947 serve percentage and a team-high 24 aces.
"She's a hard worker back there, always on the floor, keeping the ball up," Wolter noted.
Pauer, despite missing the first part of the season, led the team with 56 total blocks on the season, including 37 block solos.
"That's close to one per set, that's huge. She always helped us kind of shut things down when needed," Wolter said.
DeMeyer had a team-high 142 assists on the season as she and fellow junior Maddi Roeser split the setting duties for much of the season. Roeser finished second on the team with 94 assists.
"We ran a 6-2, so the numbers are a little skewed just with having two setters and each only doing three rotations, but Addi DeMeyer definitely stepped up this year, kind of taking in that setting role and dishing it out," Wolter said.
Rhinelander went 4-30 overall on the season and 0-12 in the Great Northern Conference. The four wins exceeded the team's win total in the previous three years combined.
"At the varsity level, we had a pretty good year," said Wolter, who took over as head coach this year after spending the past several as an assistant. "Obviously, we got off to a pretty rocky start, going down to the Dells and everything, but we really built this year. The development from the beginning of the year to the end of the year was a huge improvement throughout the team. Hat's off to all of you for working that way."
Wolter honored his teams seniors -Pauer, Hartman, Rivers Eagleson, Natalee Sundby, Brynn Brzycki and Carly Schmidt - at the end of Wednesday's speedy program. The speaking portion of the banquet took just over 12 minutes.
"This is my first senior class and I couldn't be more proud to have them," he said. "I've know all of you for multiple years, coaching on either JV or varsity. I just want to say thank you for the dedication and the work that you put in to this program. I know it's been a rough couple of years, but you guys worked really hard this year and I'm hoping what you guys did carries on to the next years going forward."
