Hodag swim takes 2nd at state
Francis wins 2 more state titles, breaks state backstroke record
Francis won the 100-yard backstroke and the 200 individual medley, the Hodags had six top-six finishes overall and the team ended the state runners-up on Friday night.
Madison Edgewood, which opted out due to COVID-19 concerns last fall when the Hodags won the WIAA D2 state title, earned their seventh straight state championship, but Rhinelander was best in class, beating Baraboo by 32 points for the runner-up spot.
Francis secured the D2 state record in the 100 backstroke, with a time of 54.39 seconds, beating Autumn Haebig's 2016 mark by 0.26 seconds. Francis also won the 200 IM at a 2:03.91, the fifth-fastest time in D2 state history.
Rhinelander had the lead after 150 yards in the 200-medley relay, but Abi Winnicki could not hold off a hard-charging Abby Reid of Edgewood as the Hodags settled for second in a school-record time of 1:45.72. The Hodags took third in the 400 freestyle relay as Genna Fugle, Winnicki, Ellyse Younker and Malia Francis went 3:34.37 for a new school record. Fugle, Karis Francis, Younker and Noelle St. Pierre were fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.34).
Winnicki added a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle in a school-record time of 52.68 seconds. She was also ninth in the 200 freestyle.
St. Pierre set personal bests as she finished 10th in the 100 breaststorke and 11th in the 50 freestyle. Karis Francis was ninth in the 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 100 butterfly. Genna Fugle was 15th in the 100 freestyle.
