Level 4 of the WIAA tournament, the final step before the WIAA state championship game at Camp Randall Stadium, is held at a neutral site located between the winners of the two regional groupings. Rhinelander is approximately halfway between Rice Lake, in the northwestern part of the state, and Menasha near the Green Bay area.
Rhinelander hosted WIAA sectional events in girls' swimming, boys' swimming and gymnastics last year, which RHS activities director Brian Paulson said helped bolster Rhinelander's chances of getting a Level 4 playoff game.
"I think, due to our upgrade in facilities and athletic department, the WIAA sees the opportunity for us to host," he said. "I'm excited for all the work that's been put in and the time that's been put in to be rewarded with a Level 4 playoff game, it's pretty exciting news for our community. It's going to bring people to our community. I'm extremely excited for that and to be able to show off our facilities to other schools and all the hard work everyone's put in."
Paulson said he anticipates roughly 2,000 fans for this evening's contest.
Rice Lake (10-2) was the winner of the eight-team regional grouping that included Rhinelander. The Warriors were the No. 3 seed in the bracket and defeated fourth-seeded Baraboo 29-13 in Level 3 to advance. Baraboo defeated Rhinelander 13-7 in the first round of the playoffs.
Menasha (10-2) was the No. 2 seed in the Bay Area regional grouping and knocked off top-seeded Luxemburg-Casco, 27-13 last week to advance.
A pair of No. 5 seeds - Monroe and Pewaukee -will meet in Muskego Friday night for the other D3 semifinal game. Rice Lake, the 2017 Division 3 state champion, is seeking its seventh state finals appearance overall. Menasha is looking for its third state finals trip. The Bluejays won the Division 2 state title in 2014 and were the runners up in Division 3 two years ago.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance at https://events.ticketspicket.com/home.
