John attended elementary school in Solon Springs and then moved with his family to Mosinee, where he graduated from the Mosinee High School. He then attended UW Whitewater and graduated in 1961 with a BS degree in business. He became a CPA and went to work for Wipfli Accounting. He first worked with Wipfli in Wausau from 1961 to 1968, then Rhinelander from 1968 to 1988 where he served as manager of the Rhinelander office, and then returned to Wausau where he served as managing partner for Wipfli from 1988 until his retirement in 1996.
While in high school John met the love of his life, Dixie Dupuis. They were married in 1958 and God blessed them with over 60 years of marriage. Dixie preceded John in death on February 8, 2019.
John and Dixie enjoyed living in both Wausau and Rhinelander. They made sure to remain in Rhinelander until all three kids graduated from high school before returning to Wausau. They always looked forward to returning to Rhinelander and their beloved cabin on Lake Mildred. They did so upon John's retirement in 1996. Each winter they enjoyed their home in Tucson, Ariz. but never left until spending Christmas with the kids, making sure they returned in time for the start of golf season in Rhinelander.
John had many interests outside his work. He enjoyed reading, waterfowl hunting, playing bridge and more than anything else, playing golf. He was a longtime member of the Wausau Country Club and the Rhinelander Country Club where he enjoyed his many close friends and the wagers that went along with that. If you wanted to get John's undivided attention all you had to say was "Press".
John was a faithful member of the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. He also supported the YMCA, many Rhinelander High School projects, the Alzheimers Association and the local business community through the Chamber of Commerce.
He was a big supporter of Hodag sports and was a big fan of all Wisconsin sports.
John is survived by his daughter Ann (Jason Haskins) Prokop, his son Michael (Carolyn) Fixmer, his grandchildren John Prokop, Adam Prokop and Melissa Fixmer, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
In addition to Dixie he was also preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Nancy.
