Gunder was born in Chicago, Illinois on Aug. 9, 1958 to Gunder O. and Mary J. (Shannon) Paulsen. In 1962, the family moved to Gillingham, Wis. Gunder was a 1976 graduate of the Richland Center High School. He then joined the Peace Corps being stationed in Guatemala, St. Vincent and Costa Rica. Gunder moved to northern Wisconsin where he attended Nicolet College earning a degree as a Land Survey Technician. He had a love of learning and continued to take classes at Nicolet over the years. He was employed with the city of Rhinelander for over 30 years, working first at the city-owned Northwood Golf Course and then later with the Parks, Buildings, and Grounds, retiring in 2017 as the Director.
Gunder enjoyed traveling and had been to Peru, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Cuba and the Cayman Islands. He also enjoyed spending time at Gustov's, cutting wood, UTV riding with his dog Chucho, snowmobiling and card playing with family, riding his Harley and anything outdoors.
He will be dearly missed by his siblings: Jeanne (Tom) Gunnill of Oak Creek, Mary (Ned) Mohan of St. Paul, Minn., Margaret (George) Sachs of Menlo Park, Calif., Nancy Ross of Appleton, Therese Paulsen of Montrose, Minn., Retta (Mike) Penson of Nipoma, Calif., Eric (Michele) Paulsen of Appleton, Tony Paulsen (Randy Pearson) of Santa Barbara, Calif. Also surviving are his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives and friends, whom he had a special and unique relationship with all. Gunder also leaves behind his four-legged companion, Chucho.
Gunder was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dawn Bangs and Rose Roberti, an infant brother Donnie Paulsen and a brother-in-law, Jerry Ross.
A private celebration of Gunder's life will be held at a later date.
