WIAA state track, girls' soccer events to remain in La Crosse, Milwaukee
Both sites had previously held the events before the cancellation of last year's editions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The WIAA stated that the state girls' soccer tournament returning to Milwaukee is pending final Board of Control approval.
The schedule of the state track meet will be altered this year from its traditional format to accommodate continued COVID-19 guidelines, the WIAA stated. The meet will be held over a three-day period with events for both genders conducted in one day for each of the respective three divisions.
The accommodations and guidelines will permit up to 5,500 in attendance for each of the three days of competition. The specific dates of the event are Thursday, June 24 for Division 3; Friday June 25 for Division 2; and Saturday, June 26 for Division 1.
The State Track & Field Championships have been held at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of UW-L since 1990. The event is the longest running state high school meet in the country with origins dating back to 1895.
A four-division girls' soccer state tournament will be held over a two-day period using both KOHLER Engines Field and Pat Jones Field simultaneously for the semifinal games. The accommodations and guidelines at Uihlein Soccer Park will permit unrestricted attendance for each of the two days of competition. Semifinals and finals in each respective division will be played on the same day with Divisions 1 and 2 scheduled for Thursday, June 24, and Divisions 3 and 4 on Friday, June 25.
The State Girls' Soccer Tournament has been held at Uihlein Soccer Park since 2004. The site has also been the home of the State Boys Soccer Tournament since 2003 with the exception of last fall and the alternate season this spring when COVID-19 accommodations and guidelines resulted in the tournament being played at separate locations.
Further details and information about the state tournament schedules, times and locations, are available the WIAA website (wiaawi.org) and each sport's respective tournament page. The WIAA stated additional details will be posted on the website when they become available.
