The Rhinelander High School golf team left a few strokes on the course Thursday, and it resulted in a big swing in the Great Northern Conference standings.

The Hodags struggled to a 380 at Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee, finishing sixth of the six teams present for the third leg of the GNC tournament. Tomahawk did not participate in the meet.

It was a struggle for the entire field on Thursday. Though Rhinelander was sixth, the Hodags were only nine strokes out of a three-way tie for second between Mosinee, Medford and Northland Pines (371). Antigo (372) was one stroke behind those three in fifth.

"It was a little windy but, I don't know. Overall, a lot of the kids struggled today across the board," coach Adam Schmidt said. "Our boys really struggled a lot with putting today, then just like silly strokes. You get up and miss a 2-footer, then miss one coming back. There'd be a three or four putt, or be 30 yards out and hit a poor shot. There were just a lot of those shots that we left out there today."

Kole Gechas led the way for the Hodags on the day, shooting 86. He shot 45 on the front nine and came back in 41 to tie for seventh overall - marking the third consecutive conference meet in which he placed in the top 10.

Garrett Kulhanek finished outside the top 10 by a stroke, taking 11th with a 90. His card was hampered by three straight triple bogeys on holes 4-6 as he shot 48 on the front. He shot 42 on the back despite an 8 on the par-5 16th hole.

"Garrett's really been crushing the ball," Schmidt noted. "One of the par 5s yesterday he hit driver-4 iron at Lawsonia. Then today I think he hit driver-6 iron into No. 11, a par 5. He was really hitting the driver well, but struggled around the greens."

Andrew Henrichs shot 101, Carter Gaber carded a 103 and Cal Laggis shot 110 for the Hodags.

Lakeland won again, but posted its highest score in three conference meets with a 339. Kaeden Nomm, who won the first two legs of the conference tournament for the T-Birds, struggled to an 89 and a tie for ninth on Thursday.

Antigo's Joe Volpentesta shot 77 to take medalist honors by five strokes over Lakeland's Jack Rubo and Northland Pines' Nick Krueger.

Rhinelander dropped to fifth in the conference standings following Thursday's match. Gechas sits fifth in the individual rankings while Kulhanek and Henrichs are tied for the final all-conference spot in 15th.

Lawsonia Invite

Things went a little better for the Hodags on Wednesday in a non-conference invite at the Lawsonia Links course in Green Lake.

Gechas and Henrichs combined to shoot 173 and tie for second in a two-man stroke play event. Kulhanek shot 85 while Gechas shot 88 in the event. The two were officially credited with third place, losing a scorecard tiebreaker with Hortonville's Ross Reinemann and Connor Schafer for the runner-up spot.

Rhinelander's second pairing of Henrichs and Gaber shot a combined 194 to place 12th of the 16 tandems in Division 1. Henrichs shot 93 and Gaber carded a 101.

"(Wednesday) was pretty awesome. They played pretty good for Lawsonia. They all said their drivers were working pretty good," Schmidt said.

Busy week

After playing matches on three consecutive days last week, the Hodags have another busy week on the docket. It kicked off yesterday as the team hosted a non-conference invite at Northwood Golf Club that concluded after deadline.

The fourth and fifth legs of the conference tournament are today and Friday at Bass Lake Golf Club and Eagle River Golf Course, respectively. The Hodags will also take part in the Merrill Best Ball Invite on Saturday.
