Mary, known to her family as Kathy, was born on Jan. 31, 1950, in St. Paul, Minn., to Richard F. and Agnes M. (Crist) Byron. At the age of five, the family moved to Naperville, Ill. Mary graduated in 1968 from Madonna High School in Aurora, Ill. She attended Alverno College in Milwaukee graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She then moved to Rhinelander working for Oneida County as a Public Health nurse, and later was employed by Dr. Kate Home Health, and Peterson Health Care where she worked with the developmentally disabled. She was united in marriage to Glenn Hessefort at Our Lady Queen of the Universe in Woodruff. When the couple were first married, they had lived in Rhinelander and then moved to rural Harshaw, living there for over 30 years.
