She was ambitious, artistic, a talented singer, beautiful young lady, absolute cat lover, and a bit of a tomboy. Jan married the love of her life, Dexter DeHorn on May 16, 1956. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together, shortly before Dexter's death in 2006.
Among Jan's loves in life were her family, friends, golf, cats, gardening, camping, travel, volunteering, wildlife, holidays and country music. Her children remember many Saturday nights being sent upstairs to bed, with the sound of laughter, and country music booming from downstairs. Jan played accordion and sang, joined by Dexter on the guitar and various musically inclined friends. "Back in the day", they were even nicknamed "Jan and Dean" by several people who knew them.
Jan worked many interesting jobs, including owner/operator of NAPA auto, Rhinelander. She worked security at the Rhinelander airport and moonlighted at the old Pizza Haven on occasion. As the activities aide at the Jolly Fisherman, she often brought residents home to join our family holidays. She found her niche as an elementary school secretary, for the Rhinelander public schools, and was instrumental in forming the Secretary and Janitorial Union.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband Dexter DeHorn, son Daniel DeHorn, parents Clyde and Lois Russ, special aunt, Esther (Lawrence) LeClaire and many pets she dearly loved.
She is survived by her brother Larry (Lois) Russ of Minocqua, sons Steven (June) DeHorn of Penacook, N.H., Michael (Joan) DeHorn of Rhinelander and daughter Tammy Clauson of Twin Cities, Minn.; grandchildren; Matthew (Paige) DeHorn of Rhinelander, Mark (Hayley) Clauson of Minneapolis, and Claire Clauson of Brooklyn, N.Y., five great-grandchildren and special niece, Carrie Danner-Vozka of Rhinelander. Jan is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, cousins, dear lifelong friends and extended family.
