Travelers who use long-term parking at the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport will soon enjoy a more user-friendly payment system.

On April 30 airport director Matt Leitner announced that the airport will be installing an automated parking revenue control system so parking fees can be paid for with a credit card.

"What you see at a lot of other commercial service airports, where you get a ticket when you come in and on the way out, is either a gate where you can use a credit card or you can pay cash," Leitner said. "You pay there at the gate and avoid the envelopes that we have now that people have to mail in."

He said the project will go out to bid in May, along with a new HVAC system and an elevator for the terminal.

"That's kind of our first wave of capital improvement projects that are, in part, going to be covered by airport general funds and in part covered by CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) grant funds," Leitner said.

Daily round-trip service by United Airlines to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is scheduled for July 1 through Sept. 30. However, it is unknown if the new payment system will be operational before those flights start.

"That will be up to the prime contractor," Leitner said, when asked about the timeline for the work to begin.

The bid process is being handled by the airport's engineering company, Mead and Hunt, which will serve as the construction manager, he added.

As the airport continues to evolve, with a number of improvements in recent years, Leitner said airport officials are pleased to also add automated parking.

"When we're out in the community, the one thing we hear about a lot is, I wish you had an automated parking system where I could use my credit card," Leitner said. "Finally we're in a position to grant that wish, so to speak, and I think it's going to serve us extremely well."
