Rhinelander's Malia Francis has punched a ticket to Omaha in June for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Francis posted a qualifying time in the 100-meter backstroke this past Thursday at the ISCA International Senior Cup in Orlando, Fla. Swimming the backstroke leg of a 400-meter mixed medley relay, Francis swam a 1 minute, 2.61-second split - beating the Olympic Trial qualifying standard by 0.08 seconds.

That time qualified her for Wave I of the Olympic Trials, which will be held June 4-7 in Omaha. Wave II of the Olympic Trials takes place June 13-20. According to USA Swimming, only swimmers competing in Wave II will be eligible to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team.

Francis, a junior, helped lead the Rhinelander High School girls' swim team to a WIAA Division 2 state championship this past November, winning individual state championships in the 100-yard backstroke, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. She also won state titles in the backstroke and butterfly in 2019 as a sophomore. She has already committed to swim at Division I Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. - the same program her older sister, Kiah, swam for.

Francis was one of three Rhinelander swimmers taking part in the ISCA event which concluded Saturday. Freshmen Abi Winnicki and Karis Francis also took part in the event. The three swam as part of the Mid Wisconsin Wave Makers Swim Club.

A follow up story will be published in a future edition of the River News.
