Tom owned and operated his own towing service, Tom's 24 Hour Towing, for over 45 years. Many of those years he had the help of his grandsons Ryan, T.J. and Cole. His son, Tom Jr. and grandson T.J. (Thomas John III) followed his footsteps and now both own their own towing services.
Tom was a member of the Pine Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years, right up to the time of his passing. He held several positions while on the dept. such as firefighter, radio engineer, MPO and the "food engineer". Tom along with his wife, Norma, planned, shopped for, prepared, served, then cleaned up for the monthly business meeting meals for the firefighters. If Tom was in charge of the meals, the firefighters ate very well.
Tom was very involved with the Hodag Country Festival, from the very beginning, right up to 2019. He helped prepare the grounds for the event, provided towing service and assisted with security. In the early years, he escorted many of the entertainers through the grounds to the backstage area.
In 2013, Tom was appointed as the town constable for the Town of Pine Lake. He was then elected to the same position in 2014 and remained the constable right up to his passing. Tom was also deputy coroner for Oneida County for several years in the late 1970s.
During Tom's long life, the thing that brought him the most happiness was spending time with his family. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent many hours spoiling them as much as possible. In addition to the family, hunting also brought him joy. He took many trips with friends and saw many places. As he got older, his favorite hunt (Obsession), was for Beanie Babies.
Survived by his wife of 55 years, Norma (Bissonnet) Quandt; daughter, Lynne (Dan) Larsen; son, Thomas (Kathy) Quandt Jr.; sister, Delores Whitford of Rhinelander; 8 grandchildren, 4 stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 4 step-great-grandchildren, plus his loving dog Daisy Mae.
Tom will be missed by his family, friends, and many others whose lives were touched by him.
A visitation will be held for Tom on Saturday, March 27, 2021 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home. You may leave your private condolences for the Quandt family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is handling the arrangements for the family.
