The Habitat For Humanity Northwoods Wisconsin Restore will soon be relocating from its current site on Kemp Street to the old Sears building on Lincoln Street.

The organization has also welcomed Dennis Shimeck as the new Restore manager.

Executive director Dave Havel said they expect to close the sale on the former Sears building on March 12 and anticipate opening the Restore to the public at their new location on April 5.

"We've been thinking about the possibility of owning a building versus renting a building for a long time," Havel said. "It's a better building, it's a better location on Lincoln Street. There's better parking and it's better financially for us. So all of the stars were aligned... We were really fortunate to make a deal and we're super excited."

"For the convenience of our customers, for the convenience of our staff and our volunteers, everything will be in one main building, which is very convenient for everyone," Shimeck added.

The main function of the Restore, Havel noted, is to generate funds in order for the organization to continue its mission of building affordable housing for families in need. Individuals and businesses donate lightly used and even new furniture, appliances and other materials and then the Restore sells those items to generate revenue to build those homes.

Havel said the organization is almost done building their latest home in Phelps, which should be finished in the coming months.

Habitat For Humanity builds at least one home for a local family in need every year, but plans for the next build are on hold due to the pandemic.

In the meantime, however, individuals can continue to donate materials and those interested in applying to become a Habitat Family can inquire with Havel at any time to get prequalified so that everything is ready to go for when the organization plans its next build.

At the same time the Restore is changing locations, Shimeck is also taking over the reins as Habitat's new Restore manager. Originally from Antigo, Shimeck has lived in the Rhinelander area for several decades and said he's excited about the new position.

"It's been a fairly smooth transition," Shimeck said. "I can't thank the staff enough... They've been more than welcoming and it's just a great move for me."

"It's an organization that is so special because it really means something when you see the final outcome of that house being built for that family," he added.

As soon as the sale is closed on March 12, Havel said materials and inventory will start to move to the new location. He added that there may be some time during the transition period when the Restore will be closed, but their hope is to stay open as much as possible during the move.

Habitat leaders will also be looking for extra volunteer help during the transition, Havel added. He said volunteers will be needed to help pack, transport and unpack materials on a daily basis from the date of closing through the end of the month and perhaps even into early April. Even after the move, volunteers are always needed to fulfill Habitat's mission. Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact the Restore for more information.
