Farmers Market Report: Vendors impressed with customer support
By Cassie Shefchik-
As I have said before, many years ago the market was set on allowing sales to begin at 8 a.m. An old school bell was rung signaling the opening of business. They had to do it that way because a few early sales caused more people to show up even earlier. A 7 or 7:30 a.m. opening made it more difficult for vendors to get their products to market as many items were harvested in the morning and others had livestock that also required tending before heading to town. It's a lot of work even when tables, canopies, and some products are already packed in the vehicle the night before. It's also a lot of work just setting up the stalls.
The Hodag Farmers' Market values its customers. They are the greatest support system of the market. All the vendors look forward to connecting with such wonderful people.
But the market needs the time to set up (remember there are only so many spots that are used to drive onto our designated area) take care of other responsibilities prior to the market.
On a side note: I spied the most wonderful loose leaf lettuce at last week's market. It was a festive bright green and dark purple. The vendor who brought it down to market only put out a few bags at a time due to space limitations. I imagined it in a lovely salad with fresh radishes, green onions, and applemint with a light vinaigrette - a taste of summer.
The Hodag Farmers' Market will be open for business on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park.
