Rhinelander's Malia Francis competed in Wave I of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team Trials in Omaha, Neb. June 4, placing 16th in the 100-meter backstroke.

Seeded 34th, Francis posted a preliminary time of 1 minute, 3.22 seconds to qualify for the B finals by 0.01 second. She improved to a 1:02.99 in the main event, but remained in 16th position.

Francis qualified for the Olympic Trials in March during a national-level swimming event in Orlando, Fla. The senior-to-be has won six WIAA state championship for the Rhinelander High School girls' swim team - including two in the 100-yard backstroke - and helped the Hodags win the WIAA Division 2 state championship last November.

Francis' event was part of a two-wave event in the Olympic. The Wave II beings June 13. Only swimmers in Wave II are eligible to make this summer's U.S. Olympic team.
