James was born in Monico on Dec. 13, 1930 to Jim and Margaret (Huven) Roberts. He was raised in Monico and attended Monico Grade School and later Three Lakes High School. He logged with his father for a few years before entering the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was stationed in France. Upon returning from the military, James began his employment with the Rhinelander Paper Mill working there for over 30 years as a re-winder operator. He also owned and operated his own bulldozing service, known as Robert's Bulldozing and this is where James received the nickname "Cat Man".
He met his future wife Jane in Rhinelander and the couple were married in Laona on Sept. 28, 1957.
James enjoyed hunting and fishing and breakfast at the Dinky Diner. But most of all James loved his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandson.
He will be dearly missed by Jane, his wife of 63 years; children: Jane (Harlan) Pumroy of Kennewick, Wash. and Sarah (Doug) Metz of Lake Tomahawk; three grandchildren: Kimberly (Kenneth) Hathaway of Kennewick, Wash., Kyle Kracht of Apple Valley, Minn., Marisha Keszler of Kennewick, Wash., one great-grandson Jack Hathaway, one brother Jerry Roberts of Monico, and four sisters: Marcie Rudis of Rhinelander, Ruth (Roger) Reader of Rhinelander, Doris Coppenger of Plover and Bonnie Roberts of Monico. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Al and George Roberts and by two sisters Betty Pence and Pat Roberts.
At the request of James, there will be no visitation or service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hildebrand Funeral Home & Cremation Specialists, 24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, 54501, 715-365-4343. Everyone is invited to sign the guestbook or leave an online condolence at www.hildebrandrussfh.com
