The Rhinelander Fire Department responded to a house fire on East Phillip Street Tuesday afternoon that took some time to extinguish due to flames getting into the eves and attic space, according to interim fire chief Josh Schmitz.

The Oneida County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center received the report of the fire in the two-story house at around 2:50 p.m. Upon arriving on scene, Schmitz initially called for mutual aid under Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS).

"But we knocked the fire down and canceled the box before anybody came," Schmitz said.

He said a propane grill had been turned on for some reason and left in contact with the wood siding of the structure.

"There was some water damage inside, but it was mainly just the exterior of the building and then up into the attic space and up into the truss system above that," Schmitz said. "So it did get up into the roof a little bit."

To combat that, firefighters cut holes into the roof with chainsaws to gain access to the hot spots.

In all, firefighters were on scene for about 2 1/2 hours.

While confident of the cause, Schmitz said exactly how the grill was turned on is still under investigation.

"I don't think they were grilling food," Schmitz said. "I think somebody turned it on, we don't know if it was kids or whatever. We're not really sure on that yet."

No one was hurt, but it will be a few days before the occupants are able to return.
