Hodag Farmers' Market report: On your mark!

Hodag Farmers' Market report: On your mark!

By Cassie Shefchik-

One of the more glamorous aspects of my job with the Hodag Farmers' Market is painting the vendor stall marks. I do it every Friday. This courteously aids in keeping everyone lined up, organizes sites, and makes the midway wide enough so cars, trucks and trailers can navigate into and out of the market area. It's a job I take seriously.

Sometimes new vendors need quick instructions on what the dots mean and they always comply. Mostly the returning vendors just set up in their designated area automatically. But once in a while a regular will straddle the marks just to see if they can raise my ire. I always take the bait. Yup, I grab it hook, line and sinker. When I inquire about it they say they didn't see the marks or they thought they'd give their neighbor more room or (my favorite) "there's marks, when did the market start doing that." They always end the exchange with a big smirk. That's when it dawns on me they only wanted me to come over, amuse them, and converse for a while.

When my oldest granddaughter visits she makes the marks. Kids can be a quick study and love helping out especially when it's something cool like this. Last year, when she was up for an extended stay, I sent this photo to her mom with my cellphone. Yes, I have a cellphone. It's a Tracfone. I never remember what its number is. I do know how to send photos to myself and my extended family and close friends. I can type out a 3 to 5-word sentence in about 10 minutes because it's a Tracfone. The caption I attached to the photo shown at right was "Teaching her to tag." Though my daughter was impressed I knew what tag/tagging/ tagger meant, I was given a warning to be a responsible adult.

But I digress.

This week I don't have to make any marks because the Hodag Farmers' Market will not be set up in our usual area in the park due to the fair. The market will be lined up along Oneida Avenue by the softball's outfield fence. There will be parking available for those who are only going to the farmers' market.

The Hodag Farmers' Market will be set up outside the fairgrounds in Pioneer Park this Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Come see the market and notice I did not make any marks for vendors. I'm sure they'll be fine.
