According to WEECDA, the award is intended to recognize and honor individuals, communities, or community groups who have been particularly vital to the success of an Extension educational program. Support may be for publication, program development, community service or any other measurable means that represent the Wisconsin Idea as it relates to the Extension mission in community development or natural resources. This award is open to the general public at large.
"I am honored to be presented the 2021 Wisconsin Idea Award," Beyer said. "I often speak about Grow North's value proposition as 'access to relevant knowledge, the latest information, and connections.' The Extension officers in my counties are pivotal in that work. Individuals like Myles Alexander, UW Extension officer in Oneida County, are tireless partners in this work. I also believe that caliber of work that can be read in the report created by Governor's Task Force on Broadband would not be the same without the facilitation by UW Extension officers Jessica Beckensdorf and Annie Jones. Many thanks to all of the Extension professionals I have been in contact with - it is immensely beneficial to the work Grow North does."
The Idea Award is given out once a year by the Wisconsin Extension Environmental and Community Development Association. The other winner of this year's Wisconsin Idea Award is former Governor and current President of University of Wisconsin, Tommy Thompson. The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, July 14 via Zoom.
