Hodag Farmers' Market report: A plethora of mushrooms

By Cassie Shefchik-

They say Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season but it's the Fourth of July that really causes an influx of traffic - it's the boom of the tourist season.

The Hodag Farmers' Market is a great place to soak up the local atmosphere and culinary tastes. Coffee, fresh produce, canned goods, barbeque sauces and rubs, honey, maple syrup, and baked goods are available.

One of the items that's always nice to see at the market is fresh, home-grown mushrooms. I've noticed this has become quite the hobby lately. Last January I saw many social media posts of mushroom-growing kits that were given as Christmas gifts. The small kits gave the recipient a great abundance of mushrooms for home use. I suspect the trend will continue.

One vendor brought down a plethora of domestic mushrooms last Saturday. They were grown in a large-scale operation which usually entails using 5-gallon buckets with 2" holes drilled all over the sides. What really captured my attention was the pink oyster mushrooms. Such a beautiful color. I just had to snap a photo.

The mushrooms shown in the photo accompanying this article, starting from the top left and clockwise are: pink oyster, Pohu (a white oyster), a variety pack of pink, gray dove, and Italian oyster, and good old shitaki. One of the main questions new customers have when purchasing new varieties of mushrooms is, "How do I use them?" They are used like any fresh button mushroom you buy in a store, much like how each variety of specific produce has a slightly different taste the same holds true for most mushrooms. The greatest exception is Chicken of the Woods mushroom that is cooked differently and actually tastes like chicken.

Customers can expect to see more mushrooms each week as domestic and foraged assortments are brought down to market.

The Hodag Farmers' Market is held at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
