The Cardinals took the lead with a three-run first inning and never relinquished it, defeating Rhinelander Green 17-11 in Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League play at Stafford Field.
Already up 5-3 in the fourth, Crandon pulled away with a four-run frame capped off by a Mavrik Mayer two-run single.
Rhinelander's defense went awry in the sixth and seventh innings as Crandon scored eight runs in the frame without the aid of an RBI. All eight runs crossed as result of Rhinelander errors.
Down 12-4 in the bottom of the sixth, the Hodags strung together their best offensive inning, pushing across five runs. Dresden Klaver walked, Johnny Turek was hit by a pitch and Adrian Patrone reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. Following a fielder's choice by A.J. Turek, Cody Everson singled home a run and Sam Schneider drove in a run on a ground out. Owen Kurtz then hit a two-run double before Tyler Morrison brought him home with a single to make it 12-9.
Unfortunately for the Hodags, Crandon would get all those runs back in the top of the seventh.
Rhinelander Green managed six hits in the contest, including a 2-for-2 night with two RBIs by Morrison. Patrone, Everson, Kurtz and Johnny Turek recorded the other hits. Noah Bell and Delaino Zivko chipped in RBIs after getting walked and hit by a pitch, respectively, with the bases loaded in the second inning.
Schneider started and went two innings for Rhinelander on the mound, allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Alex Rappley went an inning and a third, giving up three runs on three hits. Everson then worked 3 1/3 innings giving up nine runs - but only two earned - on three hits with a couple of strikeouts. Johnny Turek came on with two out in the seventh and recorded a strikeout.
The loss dropped Rhinelander Green to .500 (2-2-1) in the Senior League standings. The team was set to host Tomahawk on Thursday and will return to action Monday at Lakeland Gray.
Laser Pros (2-1-1) was set to take on Lakeland Gray and Crandon back-to-back Wednesday and Thursday in games that concluded after deadline. Laser Pros is back in action next Wednesday at home against Eagle River.
Rhinelander Gray dropped to 3-4 in the Prep League with a 10-6 loss Monday night at Tomahawk. The team was set to host Crandon on Thursday and will host Tomahawk this coming Tuesday.
