The Rhinelander/Antigo/Lakeland girls' hockey team faced some stiff competition when they met up with the Central Wisconsin Storm on Monday night at the Lakeland Ice Arena.

The Storm dominated the first two periods and won 9-1 to hand the Northern Edge their fifth straight loss.

"They came out and pushed around, they played physical hockey and we came back and gave them a little of that in the third period and definitely tightened the game," coach Tom Roeser said. "It was much more back and forth. But we've got to start playing more physical. We let them push us around too much."

The first goal of the first period came from Tristan Wicklund with assists to Hannah Baumann and Logan Crawford. It came 5:29 into the period.

About four minutes later, Samantha Federici punched it by Edge goalie Ellie Stank for the second goal of the game. The assists went to Kailey Grosskreutz and Audrey Ladewig.

In between the two goals were two saves by Stank. One she deflected to her right and the other was a high puck save. Altogether, she made 28 saves on 37 shots on goal.

Later, with a scrum at the net, Maddux Federici found a way to score with an assist to Samantha Federici. The score was 3-0 Storm.

With 4:15 left in the period, the Edge went on a power play. Their best look came when Emily Kassler took a shot that went wide left. The Storm eventually killed it off.

"We've got to find a way to put some pucks in the net, first of all, and it's going to start with our points mustering up some more strength, getting the puck to the net," coach Roeser said.

And then with 1:00 to go, Callie Johnson had a defender between her and the goalie as she made a run, but she didn't get a shot off as she was thwarted by the Storm defense.

The Storm poured it on in the second period and did it in quick fashion. The first of six goals came 13 seconds in. Kayla Piskula went one-on-one with Stank and scored. The assists to Dru Sabatke and Lauren Ellis.

Three minutes later, Holly Wasmundt passed the puck off at the last second to Ladewig, who scored on a 2-on-1 situation. Sabatke also got the assist.

Stank made a nice save in the period when she knocked a puck out of midair and fell on top of it.

"I think in order for us to compete with these top teams in the state, we have to play much more physical and we're going to take more penalties doing it, however," Roeser said. "That's going to be a big part of practice this week."

Next there was a two-minute period where the Storm scored three goals. The first came on a rebound that deflected out and was cleaned up by Crawford for a goal. Mackenzie Bautch and Wasmundt got the assists.

The next goal came 1:26 later. A couple passes by Sabatke and Kayla Piskula netted a goal by Hailey Piskula and a 7-0 Storm lead.

And then with a scrum in front of the net, Samantha Federici got one by Stank with assists also going to Hailey Piskula and Abigail Dhein.

The final goal for the Storm came on a power play chance. Ladewig went backdoor for the ninth goal of the game, assisted by Kayla Piskula and Sabatke.

The Edge did have the advantage in the final minute of the period when they controlled the puck and Maddi Roeser even got a shot on goal that was saved.

In the third and final period, the Edge played more back-and-forth hockey with the Storm. The period was highlighted by a goal that was credited to Maddi Roeser with a long, hard shot, though it may have been deflected.

"I don't know, Maddi was the shooter, she got the goal. I think it was a pass to the point, shot, I don't know if it deflected, if it did, maybe off them," coach Roeser said. "There was a lot of traffic in the net and that's what we have to create."

The assist went to Johnson. Both teams traded brief power plays in the period as two penalties overlapped each other. No goals came of it.

Kate Vizanko took a shot that went right of the net and Kassler also attempted a long shot that was saved. The Edge outscored the Storm 1-0 in the third period.

The Storm outshot the Edge 37-14.

Next up, the Edge (3-8) take on No. 1 Fox Cities tonight in Rhinelander starting at 7 p.m., and then they travel to Bay Area for a game Saturday. The puck drops at 4:30 p.m.
