In an effort to get books into the hands of youth while the Rhinelander District Library remains closed to the public for walk-in services, the library is offering teens free monthly subscription boxes.

The boxes include a library book hand-selected for the teen as well as other personalized book recommendations, a bookmark, snacks and other goodies.

The mastermind behind the project is teen librarian Elisha Sheffer, who is fulfilling the requests for book boxes. Sheffer said the impetus for starting the program was to encourage teens to read books on their own outside of school and to see reading as a source of fun.

"I heard of this from a library downstate in the Green Bay area that was doing this," Sheffer said. "I thought it was such a great idea because subscription boxes have gotten so popular, but they're so expensive. So to be able to provide teens with that service but not charge them or their parents an obscene amount of money, it just seemed like a really great thing and I wanted to hop on that."

"Something a little different is the books that come in these boxes are hand-picked for them based on their registration form," she continued.

In order to select books for teens based on their preferences, Sheffer said those interested in receiving a book box are asked to fill out a submission form which asks what genres the teen likes to read, what books they have enjoyed in the past or if they would like a specific book included in their box.

"In their box, I do include a letter explaining why I picked that book and why I think they'll like it," Sheffer added. "But it also includes other recommendations, so if they want multiple books a month, they can take those recommendations and order them online to check them out."

Once the form is completed, Sheffer will contact those interested to coordinate a pick-up time.

Teens who would like a new subscription every month are asked to fill out a submission form for each requested book box, which lets Sheffer know the teens are still interested and what books they might be in the mood for the next month.

Those interested in participating do need a library card, but Sheffer noted those who don't already have one can inquire further with the library about signing up for a free membership.

The teen book box program is available now through the foreseeable future. Sheffer said she hopes it can become an ongoing program.

Visit the Rhinelander District Library website at https://dev.rhinelanderlibrary.org and search under "young adults" to find the subscription form for the teen book boxes.
