Raymond Thomas Johnson, formerly of Rhinelander, died peacefully of complications following a heart attack on Jan. 8, 2021, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg.

Ray was born Feb. 11, 1943, in Washburn, to June and Robert "Bumps" Johnson. He was a graduate of UW-Superior, where he earned a BA in education and played football for the Yellowjackets. He taught physical education and coached at James Williams Middle School in Rhinelander for over 20 years. He also co-owned Northwoods Fitness. After retirement he moved to Fitchburg in 2007.

Ray loved to golf, play cards, spend time with his grandkids and cheer on the Badgers and Packers. Despite his move to the Madison area, he was always a Hodag at heart.

He is survived by his wife Amy, his children David, Dean, Carrie (Shawn) Christoph, Tait (Sarah), and Lindsey (Chad Nienow); brothers Dick (Sandy) and Ron (Terri); and grandchildren Brittany, Gracie, Drew, Maya, Bennett, Maisie and Calla.

A private service will be held at the family cabin on Siskiwit Lake this summer.

Ray's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Agrace for their compassionate care.
