Joe was born on July 7, 1943, in Sturgeon Bay, to Anthony and Beverly Gechas. They returned to Rhinelander and Joe was raised here. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and Rhinelander High School.
Joe has one sister, Fern (Jim) Castole in Ocala, Florida and one brother, Tim (Carla) Gechas in Juneau.
He was married to Marjorie Smith on May 18, 1968. They had six children: Amie Santini, Doreen (Jack) Bailey, twin sons Joseph (Michelle) Gechas and James Gechas, Andrew (Joanna) Gechas and Trisha (Jason) Zunk. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Deanna Gechas, Nicole Santini, Jacob Bailey, Abigail Gechas, Cayden Gechas, Jasper Gechas, Jude Zunk and Elena Zunk; 16 nephews, 11 nieces and many great-nieces and nephews.
Joe was the best dad, grampa and uncle you could wish for!
Joe was an avid sportsman, enjoying all forms of hunting with gun and bows and fishing in the summer and winter ice fishing. He taught these skills to many family and friends. He had a vegetable garden every year and enjoyed helping his wife with her flower planters.
Joe was a very special person and if you knew him you loved him. His favorite line was "That will cost you a buck and a quarter" and for many years we could find $1.25 in strange places.
We have many special memories of Joe and he will be greatly missed.
