Area high school students competed Wednesday in the Rhinelander/Northwoods Regional Tournament of the Finance and Investment Challenge Bowl (FICB). The event, usually held in person at Nicolet College, took place via Zoom.

Richard Entenmann, executive director of Asset Builders, helped run the remote competition from the Boyd Financial building.

"It was strange and challenging, but we pulled it together," Entenmann said. "Excellent volunteers, excellent sponsors and teachers (made this possible). We all wanted to do something for the kids, even though it wasn't as many or as many schools. But I believe we served the kids who wanted to be here."

FICB is a financial literacy study program culminating in a college bowl quiz competition. The FICB aligns with statewide learning standards for financial literacy and is an effective strategy to promote learning.

The competition features student teams (up to 4 members and an alternate) competing for trophies and prizes, with 12 teams expected to compete this year.

While it was hard to judge the enthusiasm of the students participating, Entenmann noted they did give up a day they weren't required to be in class, either virtually or in person, to take part in the event.

"They want to win, and they're in front with their friends, so there is that peer pressure thing going on," Entenmann said. "They gave up a day off, came into school and competed."

Rhinelander High School listed financial literacy as a graduation requirement before it was made a state requirement, and Entenmann said this has helped the Rhinelander teams.

"And there is one reason for both of those, and that's the teacher," Entenmann said. "This work is driven by teachers, so Patrick (Kubeny) was the key in getting that state thing up and going. It has attracted some resources from outside the state even to schools and does a good job getting the students here."

All FICB teams are led by adult coaches who help students study and prepare, as a classroom or an after school activity. The teams that finish in first and second-place at the Northwoods Tournament advance to the state championship this spring, where they will compete against students from other schools across Wisconsin.

Two teams from RHS finished first and second, in this year's competition.
