In a year where many community celebrations were kept to a minimum, the annual Rhinelander Lions Club Community Christmas Dinner hosted on Christmas Day at GFA Catering proved successful, even with some COVID-related alterations.

With so many individuals across our community in need of extra support due to the ongoing pandemic, the annual holiday dinner came at a crucial time for many.

Rhinelander Lion Sandy Mode said the group served 500 meals for individuals across the community to enjoy at home, many of which were actually delivered to patrons in an effort to mitigate potential spread of the virus.

"It went really well," Mode said. "The volunteers were amazing and the donations were as good as last year if not better without the indoor seating."

"It went really smooth," chef Chris Hazelton noted. "We had a lot of really good volunteers helping... and we were able to help out the community."

Although the group made a number of COVID-related changes to ensure the health and safety of patrons and volunteers, Hazelton and Mode noted the transition went well, especially with the help of those volunteers who made it all possible.

In addition to the volunteers who helped cook and serve the meal, a number of local businesses contributed as well. Trig's cooked 24 turkeys for the Lions to serve, Sowinski Farms donated potatoes and Holiday Gas Station donated milk.

Mode said the group was thankful to have the opportunity to use the dining hall at GFA Catering to prepare the meal and dish it up for patrons to take home. George Allen - owner and chef at GFA Catering and an active member of the community - recently passed away from COVID-19 shortly after offering his business as a venue to serve the community meal.

In his memory, the Lions put a sticker on every to go container honoring Allen for his generosity to the community. Allen's family also helped the Lions prepare the Christmas meal in his honor.

At a time when so many in our community are grieving the loss of loved ones as well as the loss of everyday life, countless individuals have stepped up to offer a helping hand to those who need it most. The Lions annual Community Christmas Dinner reminds us we live in a community that continuously supports one another, especially through these trying times.
