Friendship House owner Tony Sabani said the fundraiser's turnout was better than he expected, in light of COVID concerns. Although the total funds raised this year were down considerably compared to years past, due in large part to the ongoing pandemic, he noted he was happy with the results and glad to support local veterans.
Sabani has hosted the annual fundraiser for several years to benefit veterans. He said the purpose of the fundraiser is to thank local veterans while showing them support for their years of service.
"I try to do my best and support locals," Sabani said. "I've been here for so many years, locals support me and I want to make sure that I give them support back, especially the ones that need it."
AMVets and the Rhinelander Military Support Group will use the funds to support veterans at home and abroad.
Chef Chris Hazelton was also satisfied with the day's turnout. He added that local veterans even pitched in to help the Friendship House crew during the fundraiser.
"We had local veterans pouring coffee, opening doors and just helping out all day and into the night," he said.
At a time when so many are coping with the consequences of COVID-19, the funds garnered through the annual fundraiser will certainly go a long way in supporting veterans across our community and beyond.
