Louis wandered around his teenage and early adult years, working for his father at the Walgreen's Pharmacy on the East Side of Milwaukee. He met the love of his life, Marilyn, and his father told him to settle down and pick a career path: become an undertaker or become a pharmacist. He kept pursuing Marilyn, and after a while, said to her, "Marilyn, I think we will be alright." They were married July 13, 1957 in Milwaukee and then moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and continued to proudly wear his graduation suit to many events throughout his life. Louis and Marilyn returned to Milwaukee, taking over his father's pharmacy. Louis and Marilyn adopted Elizabeth Ann (Lizzard (not a typo)) and Steven Louis, and settled into their home on the South Side of Milwaukee.
Louis developed a passion for all things North Woods Wisconsin after marrying Marilyn, and moved his family to Laona in 1972, where he became "Louie: pharmacist, therapist, comedian and Forest County board member."
Louie opened his own pharmacy in January of 1984, in Laona, and continued to serve Laona and all of Forest County, as both their pharmacist and county board member, until his retirement in 1998. Louie continued to serve in Crandon Pharmacy for many years past his retirement, in between visiting his grandchildren in Arizona, traveling to Australia, fishing, hunting, gardening, and walking. Louis developed a relationship with his deer that visited his retirement home in Rhinelander; walking and talking with the many generations of deer who came year after year to walk, talk and eat treats. Louis finally settled into his retirement in the log home he built for Marilyn, fishing with his grandchildren, Faith and Zac, and counting the boats as he sat with Marilyn on their deck. Louis supported grandchildren Stephen and Madelyn in many ways throughout their lives, and proudly attended their Bachelor's graduations and Stephen's graduate celebration from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where he took the family on a memory tour, citing many incidences from his life in St. Louis with Marilyn, including a tornado and some friendly bugs.
Louis was known to many as funny, kind, giving and loud. Some of his favorite sayings are not appropriate to say in polite company, but those that knew him laughed loudly at his utterances when he was amazed or startled. Louis's generosity was known throughout Forest County, and late night calls to his home for needed medicines were always answered and provided. Louis served as a driver for the Laona Rescue Squad, making sure everyone got to the hospital. Louis did receive a couple of warnings/tickets for driving too slow in his personal vehicle, which were a private joke amongst those that knew.
Louis loved his Lord and Savior, and was a faithful attendee at St. John's in Laona, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Rhinelander. Louis enjoyed so many activities from card club, to driving his pontoon on the Wisconsin River with all of their friends (lovingly known as the Goof Troup by Louis), fishing with old family friends and new grandchildren and hunting deer, moose, elk, rabbit, duck, goose and turkey, just to name a few. He chopped wood, split wood, piled wood, and burned that wood, with tending the fireplace to be his "thing" in his later years.
Louis loved Marilyn. They were married for 63 1/2 years and did everything together, including the grocery shopping. As Marilyn became more regressed with her dementia, Dad was there, guiding and directing, ever her faithful partner. He proudly built her the retirement home of both their dreams, read the Bible to her every day, escorted her to their many activities and stepped on her toes when they danced.
Louis's family wishes to thank all staff at Milestone Senior Living and Friendly Village in Rhinelander; the doctors and nurses at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander, dear friends Denny, Denise, Randy, Jeb and Luke Ostrom & Rick and Barb Barlow; of whom have been of great help to him.
To ensure all family and friends stay safe during this unprecedented pandemic, visitation for Louis will be at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, from 9 to 11 a.m., with all COVID safety precautions put in place. A private service for the family will follow. Louis will be interred at Forest Home Cemetery in Rhinelander.
