Laurence "Larry" G. McGuire, age 83, of Rhinelander, died Jan. 31, 2021, at the Riverview Health Center in Tomahawk. He was born Oct. 27, 1937 in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of Ralph and Evelyn (Miller) McGuire.

Larry graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1955 and entered the Navy a few months later. He was stationed on the USS Kidd during his service years. Upon discharge, he married the love of his life, Joanne Flees on Oct. 21, 1961. They resided in Rhinelander and raised their family while working in, and eventually taking over, the family business, Birchfield Nurseries.

For many years, Larry could be seen out and about the Rhinelander community, and surrounding areas, helping people out with their landscaping needs. In the early 1970s, he could also be found, in the winter months, managing Camp 10 Ski Hill. He could talk with anyone and was known to start up conversations with just about anyone that crossed his path.

Larry had many loves - taking pictures, camping, his faith, helping out at church/community functions, but most of all, his family. He took great pride in his sons and grandchildren and attended many events that they participated in. All while holding the camera up to his eye to capture the moments. His smile and helpful personality will be greatly missed.

Larry is survived by his sons Larry (Betsy) McGuire and Greg (Julie) McGuire, his grandchildren Allison (Nick) Korte, Stephanie, Darren, Brendan and Marisa, his brothers William (Carol) McGuire and Lewis (Jan) McGuire, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Joanne and his parents.

A visitation for Larry will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, 2021 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Carlson Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church with Father Chris Kemp officiating. Interment will follow the services in the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery. Masks will be required and social distancing will be observed at the funeral home and at the church. You may leave your private condolences for the McGuire family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the McGuire family.
