Michael was born on April 12, 1943, in Wauwatosa, to John A. and Cecelia B. (Garvey) Burke. He was raised in Wauwatosa and was a 1961 graduate of Marquette University High School. He then attended the University of San Francisco, majoring in Business. Michael was employed in sales with Standard Electric. He was united in marriage to Elsa Ann Ziegler Kelling in Rhinelander on Sept. 29, 1973.
Mike was a devout Catholic and a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church.
Other than spending time with family and friends, Mike had two favorite passions in life, photography and golf. He won awards for his photos of the ever-changing Wisconsin River which he was able to view on a daily basis. He and Elsa enjoyed their rides up the north shore of Lake Superior where he captured pictures of majestic waterfalls. He was a member of Northwood Golf Course and the Knights of Columbus. Mike enjoyed participating in the Knights of Columbus Golf League and Men's league with his many friends. All of his family and friends will attest that he was a great story teller!
He and Elsa loved their time together on the links and enjoyed traveling to other golf destinations.They firmly embraced their Irish heritage and enjoyed everything "Irish".
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Elsa; children: Margaret (John) Garsow, Maureen (Mike) Ferguson, Kathleen (Michael) Anderson, Kimberly (Tim) Hagen, Kristina (Russ) Ostermann, Katrina Birling, Kathleen (Danny) Lundberg, Karolyn (Curt) Jashinsky, Thomas (Elizabeth) Kelling, Kolleen (James) Holma and Kieran (Shane) Spencer, 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters and a son-in-law, Mark Birling.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mike will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church located at 125 E. King Street, with Fr. Chris Kemp officiating. For the safety of the family and the Rhinelander community, when arriving at church, hands will be sanitized, masks will be required along with social distancing. When arriving at Nativity Catholic Church, please enter the church and be seated.
Immediately following the mass there will be a procession to Northland Memorial Park for the Committal Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Mike may be given to the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, 627 Coon Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, 54501, 715-369-7237.
