At approximately 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22 a semi traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 8 blew its drive shaft just as it came to where Highway 17 turns north on Rhinelander's southeast side. The drive shaft punctured one of the fuel tanks on the tractor, causing diesel to leak. The tractor had to be towed out from under the trailer, a new tractor backed into place (pictured here), and the trailer removed from the intersection. The Oneida County HAZMAT team and Pelican Fire and Rescue, along with members of the sheriff's department, responded to the scene. Travel through the intersection was snarled for about 2 1/2 hours, according to sheriff's captain Tyler Young.
