The Storm, No. 2 in the latest Wisconsin Prep Hockey rankings, defeated the Edge 9-2 Tuesday night at Greenheck Fieldhouse on the campus of D.C. Everest Senior High School. In the game, Taylor Heleniak scored her first two goals of the season for the Northern Edge.
"We knew they were going to be solid, we knew they were going to be good with the puck, shoot the puck and move the puck well amongst each other," Edge coach Tom Roeser said. "This rink's not my favorite, however I can't really blame it on the rink - they just outworked us. We knew they would.
"We got a couple of decent goals, Taylor got her first two goals of the season and first two as a varsity player. Those were nice goals, but there weren't a lot of bright spots today. They just outworked us."
It didn't take long for the Storm to get on the board. Samantha Federici scored 59 seconds into the game, the assist to Tristan Wicklund.
About two minutes later, Abigail Dhein put the puck in the back of the net with assists to Logan Crawford and Hannah Baumann.
Later on, Michaela Gerum shot the puck in the upper-right hand corner of the net for a 3-0 Storm advantage. Julia DeByle and Madigan DePuydt got the assists.
Wicklund continued to put her stamp on the game, scoring with seven minutes left in the period. She went high and right after receiving a pass from Federici.
Gerum scored one more time in the period with assists to DeByle and Ava Rode.
"Right from the get-go we were standing around and didn't stop for any of the periods," coach Roeser said.
The Edge went on the power play late in the first period. The Storm's Dru Sabatke went to the box for two minutes for body checking.
Heleniak took advantage with a run at the net, taking a shot on goal. It was saved.
The Storm had a commanding 5-0 lead after a period.
Gabi Heuser scored the sixth Storm goal when she went back door coming off a pass. The assist went to DeByle and Gerum.
That was it for the Storm in the second. Stank stood in there and made multiple saves in the period, including one in traffic at 7:51.
Heleniak finally broke the ice for the Edge. She beat her defender and shot it high and past Central Wisconsin goalie Claire Calmes for her first goal of the season as the Storm led 6-1 after two.
"They mixed their lines up. They didn't have their first, two, three lines out that period and they called the dogs off which they're a good team," coach Roeser said.
The Storm added two quick goals early in the third period first by Taylor Freidel and then Ava Rode. The Storm led 8-1.
Later on, Crawford put the puck in the net with assists to Mackenzie Bautch and Federici.
The Edge had power play chances in the third period. The Edge's Mackenzie Wissbroecker took a shot that Calmes deflected, hitting the post with less than a minute in the game.
Then Heleniak scored once more. She received a pass from Wyndi Saari, had an open look and shot it right past Calmes for her second goal of the game.
"(Taylor) worked hard, she was fore-checking, back-checking, but we need to support her," coach Roeser said. "We had a couple girls that worked hard, a lot of pucks bouncing off our sticks, but Taylor she worked hard, she controlled the puck and we need to get people in to support her."
The Storm outshot the Edge 36-12 in the game. Stank made 27 saves in the contest.
"There's few (Ellie) wants back and a few I'd like back too. She's not happy with her performance, but we didn't help her a lot," coach Roeser said. "They took a lot of shots from the low to mid-slot which weren't contested and we need to play better defense in front of her."
Up next, the Edge (0-3) host Wisconsin Valley Union Monday, Jan. 3 at Lakeland Ice Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
