Carlson Funeral Home buys coats for VFW honor guard
On Dec. 7, the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the group paid Carlson a visit to thank him for the new coats.
Mike Perry, Post 3143 commander, and the honor guard wanted to render a military hand salute to Carlson, his son Mike and funeral director Jeff Creech.
After the salute, Perry presented each of the men with a Hodag pin.
"This is the city of the Hodag, and we wear this on our hats," Perry said of the pins.
Carlson said that the funeral home and groups supporting veterans have a long history in Rhinelander.
"We've worked with the VFW or the military going back 110 years," Carlson said. "The last couple years, these gentlemen had the type of coats that weren't real warm in the winter. And they've been awful good to us and the families we serve, so it was time to get them the proper equipment. We were happy to donate to them for all they've done for us over the years."
Carlson said it was a "different group of guys" for each generation of the Carlson family running the funeral home, but he called each relationship "wonderful."
"And this is just a gift in recognition of that," Carlson said.
