Duane "Tuffy" L. Johnson, age 87 of Rhinelander, passed away early Tuesday morning, Aug. 17, 2021, at his residence under the care of Compassus Hospice and surrounded by his loving family.

Duane was born on June 1, 1934, in Elcho, on the family homestead to Linn and Gladys (Anderson) Johnson. He attended Elcho Public Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Elcho High School. On the day of their graduation, Duane and his future wife, Carole Wyant, were engaged and soon after got married. In the same year Duane enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, studying Civil Engineering. He was employed with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for 40 years, retiring as a Project Leader.

Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing & traveling - especially to Canada. He also enjoyed traveling out west, watching sports and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and a past member of a men's bowling league.

Survivors include his devoted wife Carole; children: Gary (Martha) Johnson of Elcho, Terry Johnson (Lee Oberto) of Bessemer, Mich., and Jerry "Moose" (Susie) Johnson of Rhinelander; six grandchildren: Angela (Kenneth) Eastman, Jamie (Jason) Wilson, Melissa (Ryan) Rose, Krissy Specht (Chad Ewald), Kevin (Ashley) Johnson and Tyler Johnson (Carrie Darton), two great-grandchildren: David & Amber Eastman and "one-on-the-way", five step-great-grandchildren: Ava, Lauren and Emery Wilson and Mason and Carter Rose; one brother, Gerald (Virginia) Johnson of Marshfield, and sisters-in-law; Linda Johnson of Texas, Edris Johnson of Rhinelander and Marie Johnson of Minnesota. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson David Johnson, five brothers: Robert, James, Glen, Verne & Kenneth Johnson and by two sisters, Mary Ellen Knuth and Peg Maney.

The visitation for Tuffy will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 21 S. Baird Ave, from 10 a.m. until the noon memorial service, with Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Northland Memorial Park, Rhinelander.
