Demmer Library celebrating 50 years of Demmer legacy
The first library in Three Lakes was established in 1949 with the sponsorship of the Three Lakes Women's Club. It was known as the Three Lakes Community Library by the time it moved into the new Three Lakes Community Building at the end of 1958. The library quickly began to outgrow its space and a donor was sought for a new building. The Demmer family of Milwaukee had summered in Three Lakes, and the Edward U. Demmer Foundation, established in the memory of Mr. Demmer, saw a library as an opportunity to provide a benefit to the entire community.
In the late 2000s, a gift from the estate of the late Lawrence Demmer, son of Edward U. Demmer, became the foundation of the building campaign that would eventually lead to a $2.2 million remodeling and expansion effort of the original Demmer Library.
This "Demmer 2.0" now serves the community of Three Lakes and surrounding communities with 13,400 square feet, including: a dedicated children's area, three study rooms, two large meeting rooms, a "Libratory" for creative interactive learning, and a Local History room that connects to the Three Lakes Historical Museum visitor center. The study rooms and meeting rooms are available to the public with a reservation.
The legacy of the gifts of the Demmer family continue to serve the Three Lakes community and will be recognized on the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the original building.
