Newbold voters reject building proposal; Crescent elects new chairman
By By River NEws staff-
The Newbold board held four informational meetings in March to explain to the voters its request for permission to borrow $4.1 million over 20 years to build a new town shop and make improvements to the existing town hall.
The question the voters were asked was as follows: Should the Town of Newbold borrow up to $4.1 million dollars for reconstruction of an ADA compliant town hall to include secure offices, essential meeting spaces, a new toilet room, kitchen and vestibule; along with the construction of a new town shop and garage which includes upgrading the existing shop to remain as cold storage?
The vote was 295 "yes" to 400 "no."
"Legally, we could borrow a little over $27 million dollars without asking your (voters) permission," town chairman Dave Kroll noted during one of the informational sessions. He was quick to add that while it might be legally permissible, no one on the town board would consider such an action. "Clearly we're not going to do this without public support because these are your buildings, you are co-owners in everything you see here," he explained.
In Crescent, the voters chose Joel Knutson as their new town chairman.
Knutson received 327 votes to Robb Jensen's 258. Knutson succeeds outgoing chairman Steve Richardson.
In the town supervisor race, voters chose Michael Pazdernik over Robert J. Thome Jr. Pazdernik received 308 votes while Thome received 244.
In the Town of Monico, the top two vote-getters in a tight town supervisor race were Pierre Rawoens and David Schneider, who each received 55 votes. Kevin Halverson received 52.
In the race for three seats on the School District of Rhinelander Board of Education, voters chose to re-elect incumbents Ron Counter and David Holperin as well as former board member Benjamin Roskoskey. The vote totals were as follows: Counter 2,053, Holperin 2,158, and Roskoskey 402.
Write-in candidates Ben Gauthier received 284 votes.
