Revised WIAA playoff groupings revealed in several sports
Pairings were released in cross country, boys' soccer, girls' tennis and volleyball.
The biggest change took place in cross country where, due to schools opting out of the fall season, Rhinelander has moved from Division 2 back to Division 1. Additionally, a subsectional level has been added to the tournament series.
Rhinelander will take part in a nine-team subsectional Oct. 20 that will include D.C. Everest, Marshfield, Merrill, Wausau East and Wausau West from the Wisconsin Valley Conference, along with Great Northern Conference foes Lakeland, Medford and Mosinee. The host of that subsectional has yet to be announced. The fastest teams and runners from that meet would advance to a sectional meet Oct. 24 that would include Division 1 schools from the Northwest portion of the state.
In volleyball, the Hodags also bump from Division 2 to Division 1 and will be part of a five-team regional grouping with Ashland, Lakeland, Merrill and Medford.
The Hodags remain in Division 1 for girls' tennis but now, instead of hosting a subsectional Oct. 5 as originally scheduled, the team will travel to Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay for an 11-team subsectional that includes Antigo, D.C. Everest, Marshfield, Merrill, Notre Dame, Shawano, Wausau East, Wausau West, West De Pere and Wisconsin Rapids.
In boys' soccer, which is down from four divisions to three this fall due to the number of schools that opted out, the Hodags are part of a seven-team regional draw that includes Antigo, Ashland, Hayward, Lakeland, Medford and Merrill.
The postseason is scheduled to begin Oct. 5 for girls' tennis and Oct. 20 for cross country, boys' soccer and volleyball.
Postseason groupings for football and girls' swimming had not been posted to the WIAA website as of deadline. The WIAA board of control voted last Friday to move the state girls' swim meet to Waukesha South High School, the D1 state girls' tennis meet to Lake Geneva Tennis Club and the D2 state girls' tennis meet to The Sports Core in Kohler. All three meets had to be moved from UW-Madison campus due to COVID-19 restrictions.
