A 76-year-old Tomahawk woman died Thursday en route to the hospital following a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 8 near Rhinelander.

According to Oneida County sheriff's captain Terri Hook, the county's dispatch center received multiple 9-1-1 calls just before 10:15 Thursday morning reporting a two-car head-on accident near the intersection of U.S. Highway 8 West and County Highway N in the Town of Woodboro.

"Upon arrival, deputies found several people with injuries," Hook said in a press release. "The drivers of both vehicles were transported to the hospital by ambulance. The passenger of the westbound vehicle was transported by Medivac helicopter. The passenger of the westbound vehicle passed away enroute to the hospital."

Late Friday afternoon, after notification of family was complete, the sheriff's office identified the deceased as Carole J. Brown, 76, of Tomahawk.

According to sheriff's captain Tyler Young, the operator and sole occupant of the eastbound vehicle, a Buick LeSabre, crossed the centerline and struck the westbound vehicle which was carrying two people including Brown.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, he added.

Both lanes of the highway were closed for approximately 7 hours while law enforcement cleared the scene.
