Calling all artists: Public art project will enhance ArtStart's outdoor space
By Stephanie Kuski-
The goal of the project is to convert the unused green space into a multi-use community gathering place while also supporting Northwoods artists who may be experiencing decreased revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With support from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, ArtStart is participating in Arts Wisconsin's "We're All In' Creative Workforce Program.
ArtStart will apply those funds to support the outdoor classroom and performance area project.
Melinda Childs, community cultural development director at ArtStart with support from Nicolet College, said Rhinelander will serve as a pilot community for a series of public art projects made possible with support from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
"We want to be able to offer money to artists that maybe aren't getting as many jobs right now or are struggling," Childs said. "So we will take proposals for interactive public art projects to be out in our backyard space and then we have the funding to pay them a stipend for their time and materials."
The call to artists is open to all project ideas, mediums and scales.
Projects should be interactive, durable, low maintenance and functional. Ideas for project proposals are limitless. Childs suggested projects such as a community loom, chalkboard easel or a free art library, but other ideas might include interactive elements for the outdoor classroom, shade and seating options, sculptures, landscaping, and interactive, temporary or performance art.
The project proposal deadline is Nov. 6 and projects will be selected by Nov. 20.
Project proposals will require a budget that does not exceed $5,000 and must accurately account for artist time and materials. Projects will be selected based on predetermined criteria as well as how proposed projects complement each other.
Selected projects will be installed at ArtStart next spring.
The art will be permanent or semi-permanent displays that engage community members and activate the outdoor space in the long-term. This project is meant to provide Northwoods artists access to revenue by creating a vibrant community area that encourages creativity and culture.
Those interested in submitting project proposals are encouraged to visit ArtStart's website for an electronic submission form. For specific questions about the outdoor classroom and performance area project, call ArtStart at (715) 362-4328.
