Hodag Farmers Market report: It's time for fall produce
By Cassie Shefchik-
One telltale sign of the season's bounty is the arrival of apples. Not just crab apples but luscious eating apples and apples that are good for homemade applesauce, apple crisp and apple pie, to name a few.
Large pumpkins are also available at the market. Pumpkins that are orange in color, or white. Some have fun little faux warts. There are also pie pumpkins. Small, little gourd pumpkins that can last for years if properly dried.
Cornstalks that can be used to decorate for the season can also be found at the Hodag Farmers Market. Speaking of cornstalks, several vendors are also selling ears of corn. Our local, well loved "Corn Guy" may be done for the year but fresh-picked corn is still well represented.
More winter squash is also arriving at the market lately. I've already bought a few acorn squash but I still plan on purchasing butternut, buttercup, and spaghetti squash.
Cabbage, kale, beans, beets, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers (sweet ones and hot), potatoes, mushrooms, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cucumbers, melons, and so much more fresh produce can be found at our local farmers' market.
In addition, there is a large variety of home-canned goodness waiting at the market. We also have fresh baked goods and coffee, too.
The Hodag Farmers Market will be set up at Pioneer Park in Rhinelander this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
