Woman tied to 2007 Tomahawk homicide facing felony drug charge
By River News Staff-
According to a criminal complaint filed in Oneida County Circuit Court Aug. 21, Katie L. Decker was taken into custody following a traffic stop Aug. 19 that resulted in the discovery of 2.3 grams of methamphetamine, amphetamine pills and marijuana in her vehicle.
She is charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony, as well as possession of THC, possession of amphetamine/LSD/psilocin and drug paraphernalia which are misdemeanors.
Decker made her initial appearance before Oneida County Circuit Judge Patrick O'Melia Aug. 20 at which time a $1,500 cash bond was set.
She was back in court Friday, Aug. 28, for an adjourned initial appearance, having secured legal representation.
At that time, an amended criminal complaint was filed clarifying the charges and another adjourned initial appearance was scheduled for Sept. 21.
Decker previously served a total of 13 months in jail and five years probation after pleading no contest to harboring/aiding a felon, first-degree recklessly endangering safety (as party to the crime), misdemeanor theft and entry into a locked building (as party to the crime).
The harboring/aiding a felon charge and the first-degree recklessly endangering safety charge, filed by prosecutors in Lincoln County, were tied to the murder of Tracy Maurer in April 2007.
Seth Louis, now 37, is serving a life sentence for fatally stabbing Maurer, his coworker at a Rhinelander restaurant, in her Tomahawk apartment April 6, 2007. Louis claimed he intended only to burglarize the apartment and Maurer surprised him. However, prosecutors alleged he wanted to eliminate Maurer because she had information about alleged criminal activity. Maurer was stabbed some 78 times, according to the coroner's report. In pronouncing sentence, the presiding judge referred to the murder as "one of the worst crimes in the history of Lincoln County" and ordered that Louis not be eligible for release until he reaches the age of 75.
The harboring/aiding a felon charge against Decker was filed after a friend came forward and reported that Decker told her she was hiding Louis's bloody clothes under her bed. Blood-stained clothes were later recovered from Decker's bedroom.
The recklessly endangering safety (as party to the crime) charge was filed after Louis disclosed that Decker and another woman gave him knives to use to burglarize Maurer's apartment.
The other woman served five years in prison and five years extended supervision for accompanying Louis to Maurer's home that night and driving him back to Rhinelander after the murder.
Decker faces a maximum of 3 1/2 years incarceration if convicted of the felony drug charge.
