Larry was born on April 19, 1940 in Sault St. Marie, Michigan. He was raised in Paradise, Mich. and graduated high school in 1958. He later joined the United States Navy. After a 21-year career as a submariner, he retired from the Navy in 1983 and moved back to the Northwoods of Wisconsin to reside in Rhinelander where he had served as a Navy recruiter in the early 1970s.
Larry loved Northwoods living and being outdoors. He loved fishing and always found a way to fish no matter where he lived. If he could do it while camping with some of his family all the better. He always had a garden and woodworking projects going on. While living in base housing at the naval base in Charleston, S. C., he turned a discarded missile crate into a wood shop for his backyard. Larry also loved the Lord Jesus Christ and was a member of the Rhinelander Church of Christ for many years.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ruth (Bedell), his wife Susan (Rank), and his brother Raymond (Butch). He is survived by his sisters Sue Frentner and Marilyn Shooltz of Paradise, Mich., and his wife Mary (Paffrath) of Sugar Camp. He is also survived by 12 children: Andrew, Theresa, Stephen, Jeremy, Jennifer (Mikkelson), Jason, Jill, (Kane), Jessica (Hipke), Jonathan, Ben, Nick and Zach. He was also blessed with 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
The Celebration of Life for Larry will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the Rhinelander Church of Christ, located at 1103 Thayer Street.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hildebrand Funeral Home & Cremation Specialists, 24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin 54501, 715-365-4343.
