A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin, sitting in Madison, returned an indictment Thursday against a Rhinelander man.

Dustin LaPuma, 26, has been charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin. The indictment alleges that he possessed 9mm ammunition on Aug. 10, 2020.

LaPuma was originally charged in state court Aug. 12 with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of THC (2nd and subsequent offense), carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to the police report filed in that case, LaPuma was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a traffic stop on the afternoon of Aug. 10 on West Davenport Street. When questioned by a sheriff's deputy, LaPuma allegedly admitted that there was a gun in a backpack in the car belonging to him.

After he was arrested, the backpack was searched at the jail. Police found 2 grams of what tested to be marijuana, a cellphone, a pipe for smoking marijuana and a 9mm Glock Palmer P80 in the backpack, the complaint states.

There were two bullets in the magazine but none in the chamber of the weapon, according to the police report.

If convicted in the federal case, LaPuma faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
