Lakeland STAR School/Academy receives new car for driver's education program
By Kayla Houp-
The program, lead by Lakeland STAR School/Academy director Eric Mikoleit, provides Lakeland STAR students with an opportunity to learn how to drive.
"It's a great benefit for the children in the school because driving is independence," Lakeland STAR School/Academy governance board president Gregg Walker said. "We have a lot of students already in the workforce."
With many students in the workforce, having the opportunity to learn how to drive allows students to get to work in an area where public transportation may be scarce.
"We have a great program in place," Walker said. "And it just goes to show you how generous the Northwoods is when it comes to helping these kids."
Currently, two students have gone through the program, with another five signed up.
"We have the driving simulator, which was donated, so we have all the tools in place to get these kids driving," Walker said.
The vehicle was donated by the Rhinelander GM Auto Center and Quality Collision Center in Rhinelander.
"We've been involved with the STAR Academy for a number of years," Quality Collision Center owner Dean Olson said. "We were told they were looking for a driver's ed car and they were having trouble finding one, so we basically partnered up with Rhinelander GM, and between the two of us, we basically split the donation and bought them a brand new car."
"It means everything. We're only successful because of the community that supports us," Rhinelander GM Auto Mall owner Dan Towne said. "So, any opportunity that we can get to give back to the community and directly impact our local community, we jump on it."
