The School District of Rhinelander has chosen an individual with a background in local youth sports to be the first manager of the Hodag Dome.

The school board approved the hiring of Janet Jamison Monday, Oct. 19.

Jamison will be in charge of planning and scheduling events in the dome as soon as it is fully operational.

It was an opportunity she just couldn't pass up, she said.

"I will be doing the managing of the dome with some event planning and scheduling," Jamison said. "And I'm excited to be doing that for our community."

Jamison has been involved with Rhinelander Little League for a number of years. She is also involved with the Rhinelander Community Foundation, Friends of Rhinelander Parks, serves on the Pioneer Park Historical Advisory Committee and runs the Positively Rhinelander Facebook page.

"I was on the Parks Task Force, which kind of morphed into the Friends of the Rhinelander Parks," Jamison said.

The Parks Task Force grew out of the City Council rejecting a proposal to place a second softball field at Pioneer Park. The proposal came from RHS softball coach D.J. DeMeyer who said this would allow the varsity and junior varsity teams to play in the same location. It would have also allowed Rhinelander to host softball tournaments.

One of the recommendations of the task force was to move RHS softball from Pioneer and West Parks to diamonds to be built on school property.

When asked what attracted her to the dome manager position, Jamison said it was a natural outgrowth of what she has been doing in the community.

"For years I've been involved with event planning in different community service groups in Rhinelander, and this was somewhat of a natural fit for me," she said. "Again, I think that the dome has such great potential for our community to offer a wide variety of events for people living here or visiting, so I'm excited to be a part of that moving forward."

A physical therapist, Jamison plans on doing in-patient physical therapy two days a week at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital.

"That's my part-time job that I've held for years," she said. "Now I'll be doing this dome position full-time and mom, too."

She said the interviewing process included a lot of questions pertaining to her ability to run the dome.

"Many of the questions had to do with my experience with event planning and organization. Many of them revolved around communication skills and situations in which I had dealt with conflict or difficulties in the past and how I had dealt with that," Jamison said.

"I think that I have a lot of really strong relationships developed within the community, and I'm looking forward to developing even more as I move forward in this position," she added.

Jamison said now that the dome is inflated, her main focus is on getting it ready for use by local students and the community.

The goal is to hold a formal ceremony celebrating the opening of the dome in mid to late November.
