Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020 was a milestone day in Rhinelander as the massive Hodag Dome was inflated over the course of several hours. The inflation process began around 4 p.m. and continued until past dark. According to RHS activities director Brian Paulson, the dome is now inflated to its full size, although workers are expected to continue to adjust the cables. Work will now begin on installing lights, the netting system, tennis courts and other features. Construction of the dome, the largest high school-owned air-supported dome in the country, began on April 10. It is the centerpiece of an $8.5 million sports complex project, funded by the school district and a number of private donors. Dr. Lee Swank jump-started the project with a $500,000 donation in 2019.
